Gombe Stream National Park
About Gombe Stream National Park
Gombe Stream National Park is one of Tanzania’s smallest yet most internationally recognised national parks, famous for its wild chimpanzees and remarkable contribution to primate research and conservation. Covering approximately 52 square kilometres, the park is situated along the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika, about 16 kilometres north of Kigoma town in western Tanzania. Established as a national park in 1968, Gombe gained worldwide recognition through the pioneering chimpanzee research conducted by renowned British primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall, who began her groundbreaking studies in the area in 1960. Her research transformed scientific understanding of chimpanzee behaviour, social relationships, communication and intelligence, making Gombe an important destination for wildlife enthusiasts and researchers from around the world.
The park features dramatic forested hills, steep valleys, beautiful streams, tropical vegetation and sandy beaches along Lake Tanganyika. Its natural environment provides an important habitat for wild chimpanzees, olive baboons, red-tailed monkeys, red colobus monkeys and blue monkeys. Gombe is also home to numerous bird species, reptiles and other forest wildlife. One of its most exciting experiences is guided chimpanzee trekking, which allows visitors to explore the forest with experienced park rangers while observing chimpanzees in their natural habitat. The combination of wildlife encounters, fascinating conservation history and breathtaking lake scenery makes Gombe a truly exceptional destination for travellers seeking an educational and adventurous African experience.
