About Lake Tanganyika

Lake Tanganyika is one of Africa’s most spectacular natural wonders and one of the world’s oldest, deepest and longest freshwater lakes. Covering approximately 32,900 square kilometres, the lake stretches for about 673 kilometres and reaches a maximum depth of approximately 1,470 metres. It is located in the Great Rift Valley and is shared by four countries: Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi and Zambia. Tanzania occupies a significant portion of its eastern shoreline, with Kigoma being one of the main lakeside towns and an important gateway for visitors exploring the western part of the country. The lake is internationally recognised for its remarkable geological history, exceptional freshwater biodiversity and stunning natural scenery.

Lake Tanganyika is home to an extraordinary variety of aquatic life, including hundreds of fish species, many of which are endemic to the lake. It is particularly famous for its colourful cichlid fish, which attract researchers, divers and nature enthusiasts from around the world. Along the Tanzanian shoreline, visitors can enjoy beautiful sandy beaches, forest-covered mountains, traditional fishing villages and peaceful lakeside communities. The lake also provides access to remarkable wildlife destinations such as Gombe Stream National Park and Mahale Mountains National Park, making it an important part of western Tanzania’s tourism experience. Whether visitors are interested in boat excursions, swimming, snorkelling, fishing, birdwatching or simply relaxing along the water, Lake Tanganyika offers a memorable combination of natural beauty and cultural discovery.
