Mahale Mountains National Park

About Mahale Mountains National Park

Mahale Mountains National Park is one of Tanzania’s most extraordinary and remote wilderness destinations, offering a unique combination of tropical rainforest, mountain scenery, wildlife and beautiful freshwater beaches. Covering approximately 1,613 square kilometres, the park is located in western Tanzania along the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika, within the Kigoma Region. It was officially established as a national park in 1985 to protect its remarkable forest ecosystems and wild chimpanzee populations. The park takes its name from the Mahale Mountain Range, which rises dramatically above the surrounding landscape and provides a spectacular natural backdrop. Its remote location, limited road access and relatively untouched environment make it an ideal destination for travellers seeking privacy, exclusivity and authentic African wilderness experiences.

Mahale is internationally famous for its wild chimpanzees, particularly the habituated communities that can be observed during guided forest treks. The park is believed to protect one of Africa’s most important populations of wild chimpanzees. Its diverse habitats include montane forests, tropical woodlands, river valleys, waterfalls, rocky mountain slopes and palm-fringed beaches. Mount Nkungwe, the highest peak in the Mahale Mountains, rises to approximately 2,462 metres above sea level and offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and Lake Tanganyika. Visitors can combine chimpanzee trekking with mountain hiking, kayaking, boat excursions, birdwatching, swimming and relaxation along the lake’s beautiful shoreline. This combination of rainforest wildlife and lakeside experiences makes Mahale one of Tanzania’s most distinctive safari destinations.
