Pemba Island
About Pemba Island
Pemba Island is a beautiful tropical island in the Zanzibar Archipelago, located in the Indian Ocean, approximately 50 kilometres north of Unguja Island. Covering approximately 988 square kilometres, Pemba forms part of the Zanzibar region of Tanzania and is widely recognised for its lush green landscapes, traditional coastal communities, rich marine biodiversity and peaceful atmosphere. Unlike the more developed tourism areas of Unguja, Pemba has retained much of its natural character, offering visitors a quieter and more exclusive island experience. The island has a long history connected to Indian Ocean maritime trade and is particularly famous for its extensive clove plantations, which have historically played an important role in its economy and cultural identity.
Pemba is characterised by rolling green hills, fertile agricultural land, tropical forests, mangrove ecosystems and beautiful coastal landscapes surrounded by clear Indian Ocean waters. Its coastline features numerous small islands, sheltered bays and coral reefs that provide excellent opportunities for snorkelling, scuba diving and marine exploration. One of its most famous attractions is Misali Island, a protected marine area known for its exceptional underwater biodiversity and beautiful beaches. Pemba is also home to traditional fishing villages, historic settlements and important cultural sites that allow visitors to experience the island’s authentic Swahili heritage. Whether exploring colourful coral gardens, visiting clove farms, enjoying peaceful beaches or discovering local traditions, Pemba offers a memorable tropical experience away from the busier tourist areas.
