Ruaha National Park

About Ruaha National Park

Ruaha National Park is one of Tanzania’s most spectacular wildlife destinations, renowned for its vast wilderness, dramatic landscapes and remarkable concentration of wildlife. Covering approximately 20,226 square kilometres, it is located in south-central Tanzania, primarily within the Iringa Region, with parts extending towards the Mbeya and Dodoma areas. The park was originally established as a national park in 1964 and has grown into one of the largest protected wildlife areas in East Africa. Its name comes from the Great Ruaha River, which flows along its southeastern boundary and plays an essential role in supporting the park’s wildlife, particularly during the dry season.

Ruaha is characterised by a fascinating combination of rolling hills, rocky escarpments, ancient baobab trees, open savannah grasslands, river valleys and extensive miombo woodlands. These diverse habitats provide shelter and feeding grounds for an impressive range of wildlife species. The park is particularly famous for its large elephant populations, enormous buffalo herds and significant numbers of lions. Visitors may also encounter leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles and several species of antelope. Ruaha is also an outstanding destination for bird enthusiasts, with more than 570 recorded bird species. Its remote location and relatively low tourist traffic make it an excellent choice for travellers seeking an authentic and less crowded African safari.
