Saadani National Park
About Saadani National Park
Saadani National Park is one of Tanzania’s most unique wildlife destinations, offering an extraordinary combination of traditional African wildlife safari experiences and beautiful Indian Ocean coastal scenery. Covering approximately 1,100 square kilometres, the park is situated along the northeastern coastline of Tanzania, between Bagamoyo in the south and Pangani in the north, within the Pwani and Tanga regions. It was officially established as a national park in 2005, bringing together several important natural areas, including the former Saadani Game Reserve, Mkwaja Ranch, Zaraninge Forest and the Wami River ecosystem. Saadani is particularly special because it is Tanzania’s only national park where wildlife habitats extend directly to the Indian Ocean, creating a rare environment where savannah landscapes, coastal forests, mangroves and sandy beaches exist together.
The park features a fascinating mixture of open grasslands, acacia woodlands, palm-lined beaches, mangrove forests, seasonal wetlands and coastal vegetation. These diverse ecosystems support a variety of wildlife, including elephants, lions, leopards, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, waterbucks and several antelope species. The Wami River is one of the park’s most important natural attractions, providing habitat for large populations of hippos, Nile crocodiles and numerous waterbirds. Saadani is also an important conservation area for endangered green sea turtles, which use selected coastal beaches as nesting grounds. Its combination of game drives, river boat safaris and beach experiences makes it an excellent destination for visitors who want to enjoy both wildlife adventures and coastal relaxation during one unforgettable African holiday.
