Usambara Mountains
About the Usambara Mountains
The Usambara Mountains are among Tanzania’s most beautiful and ecologically important mountain destinations, famous for their lush green landscapes, ancient tropical forests, scenic valleys and traditional rural communities. They are part of the Eastern Arc Mountains, an ancient mountain range extending across northeastern Tanzania and southeastern Kenya. The Usambara Mountains are located in the Tanga Region of northeastern Tanzania, with Lushoto serving as the main gateway to the Western Usambara Mountains, while the Eastern Usambara range is accessed through areas such as Muheza and Amani. The mountain range extends for approximately 90 kilometres, although its two main sections cover a wider geographical area. Its geological history dates back millions of years, making it one of Africa’s most important natural biodiversity hotspots.
The Usambara Mountains are divided into two main sections: the Western Usambara Mountains and the Eastern Usambara Mountains. The Western Usambara range is characterised by rolling green hills, dramatic viewpoints, agricultural landscapes, traditional villages and beautiful forest reserves. The Eastern Usambara range receives higher rainfall and is particularly famous for its tropical rainforests and exceptional biodiversity, including rare plants, birds and endemic wildlife. The area is home to several forest reserves, including Magamba and Amani, which provide important habitats for numerous bird and primate species. Visitors can enjoy mountain hiking, guided nature walks, birdwatching, waterfall excursions, cultural tours and visits to traditional farming communities. The combination of spectacular scenery, fresh mountain air and authentic local experiences makes the Usambara Mountains an excellent destination for nature lovers and adventure travellers.
